Some links on this site may be affiliate links. If you click one and later pay for the product, we may receive a commission. You pay exactly the same price either way.
Where you'll see them
Any article containing affiliate links carries a notice at the top of the page, before the content starts — not buried at the bottom. This page is the general statement; the notice on the article is the one that matters, and it appears automatically whenever an article is flagged as containing such links.
What it does not change
This is the part worth being precise about, because it's the part readers are right to be suspicious of.
- We don't choose what to write about based on commission. A large share of the tools we cover are free and open-source and pay nothing at all. Those get the same treatment as the ones that pay.
- Commission doesn't change the verdict. If a paid tool loses to a free one, the article says the free one wins. If a product's paid tier isn't worth it, the article says don't buy it — including when we'd earn something if you did.
- No vendor gets to review an article before it goes up. We do not accept payment for a review, for a placement, for a rank in a list, or for a link. We do not publish sponsored posts or guest posts.
- Vendors don't get advance notice. Nobody sees a draft, and nobody is given the chance to ask for a change before publication.
Why we use them at all
Testing software properly takes time. Affiliate commission is one way to make that sustainable without putting the articles behind a paywall. If the trade-off ever starts bending the writing, the writing is what we'd change — that's the whole point of stating it here in public.
If you'd rather not
Every affiliate link on this site points to a vendor you can also reach by typing their name into a search engine. If you'd prefer we didn't earn from your purchase, do that instead — the guide is just as useful either way, and we'd rather you read it than not.
